Currency Converter

Convert a user-provided value to and from any currency.


Use the environment you are most comfortable with. I recommend using create-react-app to create a local version of the project so that you can inspect the DOM easily from your browser when debugging. Alternatively, you can work from a blank React template in CodeSandbox. Starter code is provided after the problem specification.


Write a component with three input fields that accept from the user a floating-point number, a “from” currency, and “to” currency. On submit, convert the provided value from the first currency to the second using the free foreign exchange rate API provided by You can read their documentation and see example use cases here, though for this challenge, you will only need to issue a GET request to the following URL and access the rates object:

To generate the options in the drop-down inputs, we use Javascript’s Object.keys() function to extract an array of the keys in the name-to-code dictionary provided as a constant. We then map over the array to produce option elements for each key. We create state variables to track and store the values set in each input field, and we access these state variables to complete the conversion in the asynchronous function called by the submit handler (the callback passed to the onSubmit attribute of the form element). To display the conversion equation after the user submits, we use React’s useMemo() hook and pass a dependency array containing only the converted state variable to ensure that the component that only rerenders when converted changes (this is to prevent the line from changing while the user edits the input fields). This use of useMemo() is not completely kosher, though, as the line will not change if the calculated value is the same. Moreover, React does not guarantee that memoized values will only be recalculated when dependencies change, so all variables referenced in the function passed to useMemo() should be listed in the dependency array.
